Wall Street drops AI

Two days after the Democratic victory, the Nasdaq lost 5.52% in one session, and Tokyo followed. The culprit has a voter’s name: the data centre.

In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews won her Senate seat by nicknaming her rival “data center Darline”. On Tuesday, 56% of voters cited artificial intelligence and data centres, those server sheds that drink electricity, among the reasons for their vote, according to CNBC. Texas has just elected a governor who promised a moratorium. On Thursday, Wall Street read the ballots.

“Data center Darline”

The Nasdaq gave up 5.52%, the S&P 500 4.36%, and 2,500 billion dollars vanished in one session; the tech index is more than 11% below its October record, a correction. Bernie Sanders is calling for a nationale moratorium on data centres. OpenAI answered overnight: it will pay for all its electricity and give up non-disclosure clauses with elected officials.

Brockman picks his day

The same day, Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president, judged his company ready for the stock market in 2027, and Tom Barkin, of the Federal Reserve, announced rate rises. In Paris, the CAC 40 gained 0.34%, and Mistral AI bought SkipLabs without saying the price. The Nasdaq is still up 4.6% since January, which mostly says where it came from. When the bubble deflates, who breathes easier?
