On Tuesday evening the shutters came down before dark. Parts of Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux and Nice spent another night under curfew, and the ban on demonstrations in some Paris districts runs until 6 a.m. on Wednesday. Sébastien Lecornu, the prime minister, sees it as his remedy: the curfews “contributed to the calm of this night”, he wrote on X.

800
people brought before the courts since 17 October

The courts, for their part, are moving fast. 149 people are in custody and 800 have been brought before judges, and Gérald Darmanin, the justice minister, is announcing prison terms for people unknown to the police, while specialists urge caution.

The commissioner who said no

That leaves the culprit. Since 1 October, the government has seen in the student movement a “manoeuvre organised by LFI and its far-left proxies”. Mediapart quotes an intelligence commissioner who was allegedly asked to write up that thesis, “objectively false” in his words. “That is false”, Lecornu replies; Manuel Bompard, of LFI, is taking Laurent Nuñez to the Court of Justice of the Republic.

On Wednesday the prime minister’s office receives the unions; on Thursday, the parties. In between, a Saturday everyone is dreading. Can a country find calm again by first looking for someone to blame?
