On Tuesday in Oslo, Volodymyr Zelensky took Steve Witkoff in his arms. Zelensky says the intelligence is now flowing again.

Norway and Finland had arranged the meeting; Washington, for its part, is asking Ukraine to stop striking Russian refineries. That same evening, Witkoff flew to Moscow, where Vladimir Putin is waiting for him.

The real meeting is being prepared elsewhere. On Monday, Trump said he was open to a summit with Xi Jinping and Putin, in Shenzhen in November, to talk less about Ukraine than about “denuclearisation”. In his view, Russia has “behaved well with Kyiv and hasn’t done much”. Pierre Haski, on France Inter, sees in it a Yalta for the 21st century.
