Belgrade, Sunday evening. Shortly after 9.30 pm, Aleksandar Vučić lets it out: “We have lost the elections”. In power since 2012, he had resigned the presidency on 27 September to run for prime minister. According to projections by the CRTA observatory, the Student List wins 51% of the vote, 138 of 250 seats, against 40% and 104 seats for his Progressive Party.

A canopy, sixteen dead, two years of protest

It all began with a concrete canopy. On 1 November 2024, the freshly renovated awning of Novi Sad railway station collapsed and killed 16 people. Students blockaded faculties, marched from town to town and demanded elections. They got them, and won them, with 67.8% turnout by 7 pm, twelve points more than at the previous vote.

Not one student on the list

On the list led by Ilija Srdanović, not a single student: 250 academics, doctors and lawyers chosen by the assemblies. The loser predicts “a negative signal to investors”. Can a generation that learned politics in the street govern from a ministry?
