In the queue at a polling place this Tuesday, an American thinks first of the shopping: inflation was at 3.6% in September, wages at 3%. That, more than Iran, is why 58 million voters had already cast a ballot before the polls opened, a record. The country renews the 435 seats of the House, 35 of the Senate’s 100 and 36 governors, two years after Donald Trump’s election.

The price of beef before Iran

The campaign cost close to 12 billion dollars, the most expensive in history. Democrats are favourites for the House, the Senate is open. In Michigan, Democratic congresswoman Haley Stevens dropped her party’s candidate, Abdul El-Sayed, for his Republican rival: “betrayal”, her side replied. Donald Trump ended his campaign on the renovation of the Washington reflecting pool.

What we will know on Wednesday

The first results will come overnight, Paris time; by Wednesday morning we will know whether the president keeps Congress. He promised a million dollars to whoever gets an electoral fraud convicted, before the first ballot. At a supermarket checkout in Ohio as at one in Lyon, the vote does not change the price of beef tonight. So why, all the same, do people queue?
