Twenty-eight years on foot

On Monday, Karl Bushby pushed open his mother’s door in Hull, 28 years and 50,000 kilometres after leaving the southern tip of Chile on foot. The same day, a French horror film broke a record, Auvergne was replanting vines and an HIV treatment fell to 40 dollars a year.

He was 29, his marriage had just broken, and he had an idea: walk home. Karl Bushby left the southern tip of Chile in 1998. On Monday, at 57, he found his mother again in Hull, his port city in the north of England, which welcomed him as a hero, “the world at his feet”, headlines Courrier international. Twenty-eight years, 50,000 kilometres. In between, a whole generation grew up.

Forty dollars a year

The same day, the FDA, the American medicines agency, gave provisional clearance to the generic version of an injectable HIV preventive treatment: 40 dollars, 35.84 euros, per person per year, in 120 countries, made by India’s Dr. Reddy’s, first deliveries next month. An innovation becomes a medicine the day people can pay for it.

Vines on the volcanoes

And then the news we keep for the end: Kraken, a French horror film carried by Gazo and La Mano 1.9, breaks a cinema record; Auvergne, a great wine region in the 19th century, is replanting vines on its volcanoes; Ugo Humbert is through to the second round of the Rolex Paris Masters, “at the end of the night”. Some homecomings take longer than a childhood. Which one are you waiting for?
