100 million gone
Hackers took more than 100 million euros from the own funds of Crédit Mutuel Arkéa, a first for a European bank, and customers lost nothing. At the same time, an MP wants to tax every gigabyte sent to the French, and Xavier Niel loses his temper.
· N° 15
On Monday, the American platform Kraken saw transfers arrive that were unusual for a European bank, and blocked them. Too late for part of the money: the hackers had corrupted the computer of a contractor authorised to place orders, then drew more than 100 million euros from the own funds of Arkéa, in Brest, out of 10 billion, before converting it all into cryptocurrencies. Customers’ accounts did not move.
The Binance method
It is Binance’s method, from 29 October. Banks thought they were better armed than others, writes Le Monde; they have discovered their vulnerability. At the same time, supermarket fridges in fifteen countries have been hacked, and a contractor of the French Blood Establishment was attacked on Monday, without consequence. Who holds the keys?
5.5 cents a gigabyte
And the State is looking for money: on Friday, Socialist MP Laurent Lhardit got 5.5 cents voted per gigabyte sent to the French, to make Meta, Netflix and Amazon pay. Small sites would pay too, and Xavier Niel called the Socialists “incompetent ignoramuses”. A 100-million theft, a 5.5-cent tax: which of the two will cost you more?
