The other epidemic
Already hit by Ebola, 5,300 deaths in five months, the Democratic Republic of Congo is living through “its worst cholera epidemic in decades”: 60,000 cases, 1,800 deaths, and patients along the river, towards Kinshasa. In Nigeria, 28 assemblies said yes to state police forces. In Dakar, the surfers are waiting their turn.

The two Kivus, again: most cases come from the east of the DRC, as with Ebola, but patients are now appearing along the Congo River, “which means it could spread as far as Kinshasa”, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said on Wednesday. More than 60,000 cases, 1,800 deaths, a fatality rate close to 3%, and the rainy season on its way.
Fewer than 400,000 officers
In Nigeria, 28 state assemblies approved on Tuesday the creation of state police forces, in a country with fewer than 400,000 officers for 200 million people. Officers who speak the language and know the ground, hopes Habib Oladapo of the Civic Media Lab; governors to be watched, he also warns.
The Ngor right-hander
And in Ngor, at the tip of Dakar, Assane, 16, and Mame Seydi, 15, watch eight African surfers take on the right-hander made famous by “The Endless Summer”, in 1966. Surfing is only a demonstration at the Youth Olympic Games: “a lost chance of a medal”, says former champion Michel Bourez. An epidemic, a police force, a wave: where is Africa being decided, this morning?
